For 50 years, USAID has partnered with Indonesia to develop its human resources, build social and economic infrastructure, alleviate poverty and infectious diseases, improve food security, and improve maternal and child health. USAID has been there to provide disaster relief after earthquakes or other cataclysmic events, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Today, Indonesia serves as an important partner to the U.S. and USAID continues to invest in Indonesia’s future through innovative development solutions. View examples of USAID’s work in Indonesia in the photo slideshow below.

USAID is working with the Government of Indonesia has targeted 100 schools to encourage effective handwashing with soap and adoption of the Early USAID agriculture projects in Indonesia gave priority to increasing food production and providing extension services. The 150-km roadway, which cost $280 million, connects 74 villages to Banda Aceh and is considered a major building block to redevelop the North Sumatran economy and improve the quality of life. Photo Credit: USAID/William Frej The first rural electric cooperative in Indonesia turned on its power switch in 1980. Electricity allowed rural households to make better use of their time. Electric pumps could irrigate fields freeing villagers to do other tasks to generate income. Lighting allowed local market stalls to stay open into the night. USAID supports the Ministry of Health’s “Kelas Ibu” program in ACEH, Kalimantan, Banten, Maluku, and Papua. It is through these simple mothering classes at the village level that basic questions are answered by the village midwife or her peers.
