Amid rows of cabbage, John Atis shows off the crops grown at the Wynne Farm, a mountaintop training facility for farmers in Kenscoff, Haiti. Atis is the Kenscoff regional director for USAID's Watershed Initiative for National Natural Environmental Resources (WINNER) program. Ugandans participating in USAID’s cash-for-work program are building a road that will link their community with the nearest market as part of the 2009 Horn Food Price Crisis Response (HFPCR). Photo credit: Kaarli Sundsmo, USAID In a neonatal intensive unit in Nigeria, Hope becomes the first baby to be treated by D-Rev's Brilliance device. Hope was diagnosed with severe jaundice and needed an exchange blood transfusion to prevent brain damage or death. Due to the baby's low birth weight (about 2.6 pounds), a local doctor was unwilling to do an exchange transfusion. After sleeping one night under Brilliance, a low-energy device that uses strategically placed, high-intensity blue LEDs to treat severe jaundice in newborns, Hope no longer required the risky transfusion. SAVE's work is founded on the belief that appreciating Cyprus' multicultural past is one way of ensuring a more peaceful future. The Accelerating Sustainable Agriculture Program is a USAID-funded project that works with farmers throughout Afghanistan to introduce new strains of alfalfa with higher levels of protein to help livestock survive cold winters. Now living in an Internally Displaced Person camp in Goz Beida, Chad, Saboune cares for his own six children, as well as his sister's seven children, after she died from illness in the camp. He is seen here in the shop he opened with the help of World Concern's Cash for Work program, which is funded by USAID. He used his earnings from daily labor to feed and clothe the 13 children in his care, as well as purchase goods for his shop. Today, his successful business has grown to employ seven other people. Photo credit: Derek Sciba, World Concern This man returns home with his family's allocation of long-lasting, insecticide-treated mosquito nets (LLINs), a highly effective tool in malaria control. He is the beneficiary of the universal coverage strategy in Senegal, which distributes nets to cover every sleeping space in the household, rather than only targeting pregnant women and young children rather than only targeting pregnant women and young children. USAID/Senegal, through the President's Malaria Initiative, contributed 19,000 LLINs for this pilot activity in Velingara, Senegal, and has since provided the majority of resources to roll out the strategy in six regions. The restoration project celebrates the shared cultural heritage and history of the divided island to promote building bridges of cooperation and understanding for reconciliation. USAID projects in Congo are working to create the conditions necessary for people like this woman to achieve sustainable livelihoods. The effort provides training to out-of-school youth in Mindanao to prepare them for jobs.
